Class Descriptions
Claymation Beginning and Advanced*±
Live the life of a Claymation artist as you create your own story and characters, form them with clay and film them frame-by-frame with special effects and a soundtrack! Learn about stop-motion animation and time-lapse movies using iStopMotion software. The advanced level teaches new techniques, provides increased challenges and gives more instruction on adding extra frames and effects.
Coasters and Contraptions
Discover your inner mechanical engineer as you explore the world's most exciting devices! Leverage your knowledge of Newton's laws to design, build and test elaborate Rube Goldberg machines, and create roller coasters with complex loops, twists and angles.
Computer Programming*
Unravel the mysteries of computer language and code! Use Eclipse and other software to learn about variables, loops, conditional statements and debugging. Learn to write your own code in Java, then use your new skills to design your very own games and graphics.
Digital Photography*
Uncover your technical and artistic photography skills by delving into all aspects of digital camera work. Learn the tricks of image composition and perspective, and test out your camera's tools for lighting, aperture and shutter. Take portraits, action shots and photos of landscapes, then dig into Photoshop Elements and create your very own portfolio and gallery showcase!
Filmmaking*
Turn your cinematographic vision into a storyboard and script and direct your own short film. If you're a music fan, get creative and make a short music video. Learn to use iMovie, green screens and high-performance camcorders to record and edit your masterpiece, then take home your mini-movie or music video on a DVD for your world premiere.
Green Design: Solar Engineering
Harness the power of the sun! Investigate the science behind photovoltaic panels, alternative fuels and hybrid cars. Go green and dig into solar energy by designing and building your own solar cells, houses and gadgets.
Inventor's Workshop
Work with a team to design, build and test your inventions in the ultimate Design Challenge class. Learn how to make electricity work for you by designing circuit diagrams and switches, dismantle appliances to see their intricate insides and wire your own unique light to take home. Imagine your newest creations, secure a patent and invent away!
Junior M.D.
Become a doctor at The Tech Med School and ace your boards by the end of the week! Investigate the physiology of the amazing human body, then explore its many systems and intricacies during your daily medical rotations. Dissect animal parts, practice using real medical instruments and learn to recognize and identify symptoms and illness.
Junior Surgeons
Uncover the biological secrets of the human body by learning how surgeries are preformed. Discover the realities of an emergency room-triage, diagnoses and operations-then dig into new dissections, innovative surgery techniques and modern biotechnology. Step into a surgeon's scrubs, and learn ways that medical technology can save lives!
Kitchen Chemistry (New for 2010)
Discover the chemistry in your favorite culinary creations! Learn the scientific concepts behind molecular interactions and investigate the properties and composition of common ingredients. Extract lipids from foods, break down the components of fire and flash freeze ice cream. We'll mix, cook, taste, examine and explode the extraordinary contents of your kitchen cupboards.
Lego Robotics Beginning and Advanced*±
Use the latest Lego Mindstorm NXT software and Technic building pieces to design, build and program robots that will take on real-world design challenges. Learn engineering concepts like gear ratios, levers and pulleys that will help your robot survive natural disasters, retrieve objects and navigate difficult terrain. The advanced level provides extra challenges and more in-depth programming skills.
Lego Robotics for Girls*
An entire week of Lego Robotics just for girls! Take on design challenges using Lego NXT technology, solving them with a team of girls that shares your passion for science and engineering.
Music and Technology* (New for 2010)
Embark on a musical exploration of the digital variety! Work with a combination of the latest software, including GarageBand, to create your own tunes, mash-ups and original scores. Learn the techniques and details of editing, processing, synthesizing and sampling, then take home a CD showcasing your new and innovative sounds.
Science of Sports
Discover how Newton's Laws relate to all your favorite sports in this class for athletes and non-athletes alike. Learn the physics behind the momentum of a soccer ball, the aerodynamics of a Frisbee and the trajectory of a water balloon, then use what you've learned to create your own sport. Get ready for sports outside in the sunshine, and prepare to get a little wet along the way!
Tech Explorers
Become a Tech Explorer by joining our staff on a journey of discovery through The Tech Museum! Explore the galleries, engage in Design Challenge activities inspired by the current Tech exhibits and set out on your own expedition through the museum on a Tech-style scavenger hunt. Learn what goes on behind the scenes at the IMAX Theater and see a movie on the big screen, then finish off the week by becoming a museum curator and designing your own Tech gallery.
Video Game Design Beginning*
In this computer-based class, you can develop all the characters, backdrops and rules of play for your own computer game world! Learn the basics of programming and design, then use MultiMedia Fusion 2 to build a unique game with graphics and sound effects. Master design puzzles to move your characters through multiple levels of the game you've created.
Video Game Design Masters*± (New for 2010)
For those who have already discovered a passion for video game design, this is the ultimate class for taking your skills to the next level. Video Game Design MASTERS is an all-day class (9am to 12pm AND 1pm to 4pm), boasting 30 hours of curriculum chock-full of new challenges, advanced programming and special effects. Learn about non-linear gameplay and use your MultiMedia Fusion 2 skills to create 3D effects. Establish your own video game design company and learn what it's like to collaborate on a real design team!
Web, Wikis and Widgets* (Revised for 2010, Previously Web Architects)
From YouTube to Twitter, Flickr to Wiki, Blogspot to RSS and everything in between, web design has entered a new realm of community interaction! In this newly revamped class, use Macromedia Dreamweaver to learn the basics of webpage construction and design. Investigate how to use the Internet's newest "Web 2.0" elements-social networking, web applications, multimedia collaboration-in the safest and most creative ways. Work with a partner to design and publish the website of your dreams, then celebrate your success with a launch party!
* These technology-related classes require an additional $50 lab fee.
± Our Advanced classes (in Claymation and Lego Robotics) and Video Game Design Masters are for campers who have previous experience in these subject areas. While it is not required for campers to have taken the Beginning version of the class at The Tech Summer Camps, it is recommended.
